Dr. Augustine Ramirez (1928–2015)

Dr. Augustine Ramirez was born in Corona, California, to an immigrant family and was raised in the Norco community, where he also received his early education. He frequently credited his mother for instilling in him the value of education and encouraging him to pursue a life of purpose and achievement. From an early age, Dr. Ramirez aspired to become an educator and set two enduring goals: to earn a doctoral degree from the University of Southern California and to serve as superintendent of schools in his hometown. Through perseverance and dedication, he achieved both.

Following his graduation from Corona High School, Dr. Ramirez attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. He began his professional career as a Spanish teacher at Fontana High School in Fontana, California. He later returned to the Corona-Norco community, where he served for more than 22 years as both a teacher and an administrator within the Corona-Norco Unified School District.

Dr. Ramirez attributed much of his success to the unwavering support of his wife, Connie, who managed family responsibilities while he pursued his Doctorate in Education at the University of Southern California. In 1977, three years after earning his doctorate, he fulfilled a lifelong ambition when he was appointed Superintendent of Schools for the Corona-Norco Unified School District, becoming the first Hispanic superintendent in the district’s history. He served in this role for six and a half years.

In 1984, Dr. Ramirez was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. He concluded his distinguished career after 40 years of service in education.

Dr. Ramirez is remembered for his unwavering commitment to students, staff, and families, and for fostering a culture of respect, integrity, and excellence. His legacy continues to inspire future generations to pursue their aspirations and to serve their communities with dedication and pride.
